Over the past few years, the investment in France in new production equipment has been insufficient to keep pace with the continuing increase in consumption. In the medium-term, France’s energy independence is at stake. RTE (France’s Electricity Transmission Network) estimates the new capacity needed by the autumn of 2009 at 800 MW.
Therefore POWEO has implemented an ambitious industrial plan to construct additional power-generating capacity, by establishing an alliance with VERBUND, the national Austrian operator and one of Europe’s leading hydroelectric producers.
While remaining independent, this strategic alliance allows the company to realise its ambition of becoming more than a simple supplier. Consequently, POWEO consolidates its position as the leading independent operator in the new market context, and gives itself the means to develop more competitive offers and services, while placing sustainable development and responsible consumption at the heart of its action.

This strategic mission is a response to domestic needs:
• Demand for energy is increasing and France needs additional generation capacities to secure its energy independence.
• Existing thermal generation facilities are ageing and France needs new power plants to modernise those facilities and bring them into compliance with environmental requirements.
• The flexibility of existing power generation facilities must be increased to cater for consumption peaks, which nuclear power plants cannot do efficiently.
POWEO is pursuing its target of obtaining 25% of its total energy generation mix from facilities producing energy from renewable sources.
POWEO develops many projects in wind energy, solar power, hydroelectricity and biomass.
